The car I hate most in the world, made worse. I didn't think it possible. And here I thought I was done drinking beer tonight... guess not! What has been seen...

No trolling here, just out of curiosity, why do you hate the New Beetle more than any other vehicle?
< <
>>
(fair warning, It's a slightly loaded question, I DD a 2000 with the 2.slow engine and a 5MT)
I've driven soooo many worse vehicles, and seen many lesser cars come and go. Is it ideal? Probably not, but it's just a golf with a different body and a better crash structure and which is harder to work on. For the record, if it's personal interaction with the vehicle, I understand this quite well, as working on these cars is a pain (additionally, my most reviled vehicle is the first generation Ford Taurus, I have pushed more of these than any other car ever. I'm shocked that they made it to a second generation).

I really dont like that gen beetle either. Mainly because the majority of people that are fanatical about them do this to them:

Also, My mom says theyre cute. I dont wanna drive anything that any mom thinks is cute

Fair question. And i don't fault you for driving one. I have a client with a 2003 TDI Beetle with 410k on it, and the engine& trans have never been opened.
It's mostly because I work on lots of them, and I believe that they took a Golf, a perfectly good car, and ruined it with cute styling & plastic. A German attempt at a PT Cruiser. That said, your 2.slow is a great engine, almost impossible to kill. And the manual, of course, is the one to have. VW automatics of the era are shit.
I owned a Mk4 VR6 GTI for 155k, and it was the best car ive ever had. I'd still have it if it had 2 more doors. But the Beetles, I feel, are comparatively poorly designed, and are harder to work on. Not a perspective most people have of them, I'll admit. And i will say the new generation looks good to me. There are certainly worse cars out there, and many more I dislike on similar grounds, but of those, I see the most of the Beetle.

LOL. I have debated that at times... of course, I've also debated a full on Herbie livery, so...
My mom thinks that the Volvo P1800/1800S and Shelby Cobra are cute (these are the two cars she learned to drive stick on, they belonged to guys who were trying to date her at the time). She's also a huge fan of the OG Mini and VW Carmen Ghia. So I guess I don't have the issue with my mom liking the same cars I do. =)
But having driven a New Beetle for years, I've learned to appreciate the funny looks, nod and wave when a group of girls points and laughs, and giggle when teenagers hit each others arms playing slugbug. It's a capable platform with the same gremlins of other VWs of the era, just cuter. (I used to stand out in many ways in the way I dressed and carried myself, so some attention for driving a vehicle which doesn't match what people expect is just par for the course in my life).

In certain aspects I can grow to like them. Like for instance if that limo above wasnt a limo but still had the wing, the wheels and the black paint I can sorta like it. Or as a herbie clone. But as a whole, there isnt enough to redeem it in my mind. also that thing about the golf that Tfritch said

I have been quite impressed with the newest gen Beetles. They seem like a much better application of the space, but they still shoehorn a lot of stuff in a small compartment (for that I really miss my old B13 Sentra and early 2000's Accent, tiny engine in a medium compartment, makes for easy access to everything ).
Anyone who hates the New Beetle because it's as serviceable as your standard modern Audi? I 100% agree. The damn car is a nightmare to work on compared to it's platform siblings (though the VR6's which were crammed into Golf's and Jetta's get no love from me for the same reasons).
For the record, I agree with you as to why you hate it. And if I didn't own one, I'd probably be right there with you. =)

Yeah, when she told me that story, that there were two guys who were trying to date her, and both of them wanted to teach her how to drive a manual... And they both were into cars and one drove a "Volvo Sports Car" (two quick questions and there was no doubt that it was a 1800) and the other had this convertible Shelby with too much power that was just amazing to look at but kind of hard to drive. And I showed her pictures, first of the Mustangs, just wondering (nope) and then the actual Cobra, and yep, that was the car.
I wish I learned on something like that... but no... a 1985 Camry and an '86 Izusu P'up. Sigh.

Tfritch isn't wrong. And I understand the dislike, but a lot of it is just because it's not a popular car. Driving one is pretty nice, it's quite like a golf but with slightly different sight lines and not quite as functional in terms of hauling stuff, but the back seat is comfortable, and it's a solid car provided you don't have to do any major service yourself.

I learned how gears work on a old Toyota pickup and I learned learned (aka heel toe) on a 911.
I envy your mom.

Oh man, the B13 Sentra SE-R is still a benchmark car for me. I'd daily one of those, no questions asked.
The VR6 is not without fault as far as maintenance goes, but the joy of the engine goes a long way towards mitigating that, to me. I love those things.
I finished my last Sierra Celebration an hour ago, but cheers anyway!

Cheers! I finished off my only beer of the night a bit ago (broke out a Breakfast Stout...wanted something chocolatey), I finished my last Celebration a couple of weeks back. Was pretty damned great this year.

Aye, that it was. I've still got a couple gallons left in the garage. Not sure what's next. I have a Green Flash Green Bullet on deck for tomorrow (shit... today?), looking forward to that.

while I would never consider driving one myself, I respect the beetle for at least trying.
So many other auto designs are either lackluster or wholeheartedly derivative.
While obviously not a perfect car at least it has character which so many today do not.
